#femlead chat 5/8/12; topic: Creating Leadership Opportunities for Grad Students; moderator: @bonstewart

  1. Between conf calls and meetings with students--I missed this week's #femlead Will say--good networks priceless! @JoVanEvery
  2. I was involved with two diff writing groups as a grad student. Crucial! #femlead
  3. @Brandievanorder and thanks very much for contributing to #femlead today. what a lively conversation. :)
  4. @bonstewart Definitely agree. My experience is more with straight-from-undergrad grads. Thanks for the great #femlead conversation today!
  5. @literarychica always an interesting learning exp, seeing so many different perspectives trying to come into conversation together #femlead
  6. @bonstewart Yes: the range of vision and viewpoints re: #highered leadership is what makes #femlead so interesting!
  7. @Brandievanorder definitely are benefits! as grad students increasingly become 35+ w/yrs of work exp, tho, student gov't=odd fit. #femlead
  8. @bonstewart Thanks for leading! I'm glad I could make it this week. :) #femlead
  9. @janineutell my pleasure. great experience & opportunity to see different reflections of what leadership (and student) mean to ppl. #femlead
  10. @bonstewart Those I know who pursued it experienced the benefits, including academically (disclaimer: I'm an undergrad student gov) #femlead
  11. thanks for all the thought-provoking input, folks. opening up concepts of leadership within #highered is interesting stuff. #femlead
  12. @janineutell Yes, I agree. There needs to be a more holistic vision. Opportunities for leadership where they are now, for example. #femlead
  13. helping grad students visualize their (changing) role within the academy - not limited to hierarchy - imp't challenge. #femlead
  14. Many thanks to @bonstewart for moderating! Anyone have a topic/want to mod for 5/22? #femlead
  15. @earnestgirl yes. tho even when it's in their nature, understanding roles implicitly open for them can foster or shut down desire. #femlead
  16. @bonstewart Another challenge is turnover. Have to help students see value in efforts for which they may not be around for outcome. #femlead
  17. Yes, and for educ in general. MT @janineutell: More holistic vision for grad work? #femlead
  18. @Brandievanorder yeh, if student gov't is the way leadership is framed, i can see why not. it's ghettoized: student to student. #femlead
  19. in 90min, 2pm EDT: i'm hosting a #femlead chat on scaffolding leadership opportunities for grad students. thx @UVenus, for the opportunity!
  20. @injenuity that's a really important point. student services that are campus-based serve campus students far more. #femlead
  21. maybe #highered still has holdover concepts of students as youth needing sheltered growth all round? challenge as populations shift #femlead
  22. @bonstewart In my XP grads have not always wanted the "leadership" (i.e. student govt)- fine with 1 or 2 representing voice of many #femlead
