Connecticut school shooting: Another horror unfolds

A shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Conn., left 27 dead, 20 of them children. Here are some thoughts from politicians, parents and others on social media about the tragedy.

  1. USA TODAY's editorial "Newtown school massacre begs for change" states, "The fact is, people with guns kill people, and more must be done to separate the most disturbed individuals from the deadliest weapons." Readers debate:
  2. The fact is people kill people, doesn't matter what tool they use to do it. This is a cultural problem that has been seeping into America for the last 20 or so years. I don't know if it's the violence in video games, TV, movies but our kids are being desensitized and do not value life as we once did. Firearms are just tools, and the vast majority of them are never used to harm anyone. It's the individual who kills not the firearm.
  3. Let's have this stupid conversation again about whether now is the time to debate necessary changes in gun laws so we can ignore the problem until the next massacre occurs, and then we can have the conversation all over again.
  4. Sorry. None of the proposed changes suggested would have prevented this tragedy. An assault rifle was not used and the guns were not purchased at a gun show. An all out ban on guns will only keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens, criminals already intent on breaking the law will still get guns. The issue isn't guns. The issue has been mentally deranged individuals.
  5. @usatopinion Absolutely not the right time to debate gun rights.. Let's come together as a nation & do what each of us can for #Newtown.
  6. @USATOpinion The time has passed for debate. How many more innocent lives have to be snuffed out before our leaders start earning their pay?
  7. If Americans need a weapon , why they need more than one and more than 10 bullets?. That should be the limit.
  8. Initial reaction Friday about the tragedy:
  9. My heart breaks for all the families in Connecticut today. How many times America? How many? #SandyHook
  10. My heart is broken and goes out to the Newtown victims and their families. I was in tears seeing the #CTshooting unfold.
  11. "While nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need" —President Obama #CTshooting
  12. We will do everything in our power to assist and support the healing and recovery of Newtown.
  13. As a father, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this horrific tragedy in Connecticut.
  14. The horror in #newtown seems unbearable, but we will lock arms & unite as citizens, for that is how we rise above evil j.mp/U0KFxm
  15. No words can console the parents of the children murdered at Sandy Hook. We share our prayers and our grief over these horrifying events.
  16. PHOTO: IPS staff attend vigil to mourn student shootings, call for end to gun violence, @whitehouse. http://pic.twitter.com/eMusofzT
  17. After Belcher murder-suicide they said he could've even used his bare hands, but #SandyHook tragedy doesn't happen w/o guns #GunControlNow
  18. Guns dont kill people, people kill people. Regulation only starves our rights. Might as well put a controll on pointy objects.
  19. This type of slaughter began with the breakdown of family, faith & community. It is foolhardy to try to blame guns--they were always there.
  20. We need to change people, not gun laws. More Love, More Caring, More Jesus #sandyhook #ct #love
  21. Now IS the time for discussion. We can't wait until the next tragedy #SandyHook #TodayIsTheDay
  22. Hate when tragedies are made into a political statement. My heart is in #connecticut #sandyhook
  23. Heart prayers and thoughts go out to #sandyhook victims and family. Hate we live in a world where schools aren't safe. Hug your kids tight!!
