Advancing industry and conserving the environment

At the U of MN, researchers are developing solutions to environmental challenges & pioneering the next generation of mining and energy independence. These efforts are behind MnDRIVE, the U’s proposal for a new, ongoing partnership with the state to enhance Discovery, Research & Economic development.

  1. Earthducation is a series of 7 expeditions to every continent over the course of 4 years (2011-2014) designed to create a world narrative of the dynamic intersections between education and sustainability.
  2. "Passage to India" is about a multidisciplinary collaboration between the U's Institute on the Environment, College of Science and Engineering, and Carlson School of Management. Graduate and undergraduate students worked with Indian university students to create a social venture that focused on improving street-food safety in Delhi.
  3. Q&A with UMN student Gretchen Daily, one of the collaborator's in the Natural Capital Project, which has done ecosystem services evaluation work in Hawai.
  4. UMN architecture and landscape architecture studied the design of Duluth and surrounding areas and met with the director of economic development for the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, storm water specialists, senior city planners, faculty and staff from the University of Minnesota Duluth, and Duluth mayor Don Ness.
  5. "Our Global Kitchen" is a major exhibition on food and agriculture that was developed with a large amount of input (data and consultation) from the Institute on the Environment's Global Landscapes Initiative.
