US Vice Presidential Debate 2012: hot topics and the Twitter reaction

US Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan's vice presidential debate at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky brought out a great deal of reaction and commentary on Twitter. Below are a few of the hot topics and some selected reaction on Twitter

  1. Who do you think won the Vice Presidential Debate tonight...Vice President Joe Biden or Rep. Paul Ryan? #VPDebate
  2. The opener: The debate began with a question on security intelligence. Martha Raddatz, the debate moderator, brought up the terrorist attack last month that killed US ambassador Chris Stevens in Benghazi, Libya. She asked; "Wasn't this a massive intelligence failure?"
  3. Ryan hits admin for not enough security at embassies. Doesn't mention that GOP cut embassy security #vpdebate
  4. Hard to believe @JoeBiden that they never received request for more security in Benghazi.
  5. Um, not to put too fine a point on it, but who voted to defund security in Benghazi, Paul Ryan? #Current2012 #vpdebate
  6. Biden uses Libya question to hammer Romney's range of positions on Iraq and targeting Bin Laden. #hardball
  7. Iran: A full-throated debate over threat of a nuclear Iran, in which Mr Ryan sparred with Mr Biden over Tehran's technological progress, was the first country-specific foreign policy talking point.
  8. I love that Biden pointed out Iran does NOT have a nuclear weapon. Correct and brave. #Current2012
  9. Bidens "weapons" argument about Iran is absurd. A big, bulky inefficient nuclear weapon in a ship would be devastating
  10. Wow. Biden wants to "calm down" on preventing Iran's nuclear weapon development - admits close to nuke material #VPDebate
  11. Biden really thinks that weakening our nuclear power while Iran does not will not pose a problem. Not surprised. #VPDebate
  12. I hope Biden is as skeptical of military action against Iran when he's in the Sit Room as in the debate.
  13. Medicare: Mr Biden and Mr Ryan also outlined their competing plans on the Medicare healthcare programme for over-65s, generating a debate on where exactly the cuts need to be made.
  14. Paul Ryan has the audacity to talk about $716 billion in Medicare savings that he included in his own budget plan. Takes a lot of brass.
  15. Mitt Romney: Here's my plan. Step 1: Get old people to vote for us. Step 2: Kill old people by dismantling Medicare. Step 3: Profit.
  16. Ryan's plan to voucherize medicare and end the program as we know it is only popular in one place: house GOP caucus #msnbc2012 #vpdebate
  17. 47 per cent: While Mr Obama did not mention Mr Romney's well know remarks that 47 per cent of Americans are 'dependant on Government' in the first presidential debate, Mr Biden took the opportunity in this debate to bring the comments forward. When discussing Mr Romney's economic policies, Mr Biden said, "It shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47 percent of the American people are unwilling to take responsibility of their own lives."
  18. Finally, after one entire presidential debate and 23 minutes into this one, "47%" is finally mentioned.
  19. #vpdebate. 47 percent! finally! Biden goes on his "my people" rant. "I've had it up to here" says Joltin' Joe!
  20. Ryan suggests the 47 percent comment was a Biden style gaffe. Biden points out: But I always say what I mean. So did Romney.
  21. Ryan's going to have to say "he cares about 100% of Americans" about 30 times for it to move the needle #vpdebate
  22. Pretty clear that Biden's strategy tonight is to do everything Democrats wish Obama did last week. Call out "malarkey," hit the 47%, etc.
  23. Economy: When asked about the economy and taxes, Mr Ryan said there aren't enough rich to tax to pay for all of Mr Obama's spending. Mr Biden said the only way to pay for Mr Romney's plan is to raise taxes for middle-class taxes, something the Obama administration does not want to do.
