#50Tips: The Collection

On Monday, March 11, 2013, Publisher's Lunch announced that EL James, author of "50 Shades of Grey," is releasing an Inner Goddess journal (http://bit.ly/W1MADV) that will include writing tips. I started guessing what her writing tips might be. It became collaborative awesomeness.

  1. Via @PublishersLunch this made me snortlaugh: EL James to publish Inner Goddess journal w/ writing tips. bit.ly/W1MADV #50tips
  2. #50tips if you didn't like Twilight, (and what's wrong with you?) find another very popular book. You're looking for characters.
  3. #50tips Don't worry about repeated phrases or things like commas. They don't, really matter really,.
  4. @SmartBitches #50tips Make sure to use British slang in your US books, and US slang in your British books!
  5. .@SmartBitches Be really familiar with the find and replace function of your word processing program. #50tips
  6. #50tips If you're not sure what to write next, go back and rewrite the paragraph from 2 pages ago, only with more lip biting. And holy crap.
  7. @SmartBitches Watch a film, drool over an actor, write their manners into the script. It's called characterisation. #50tips
  8. #50tips Once you've finished, kidnap and hide several attorneys in your basement for some hilarious infringement suits.
  9. No, college students wouldn't have their own email addy. Everyone knows technology is for the older generation. #50tips
  10. @SmartBitches P.S. Remember British spelling when you're writing about American characters! #50tips
  11. #50tips Don't worry if you don't actually know anything about complex subjects like BDSM or corporate business. Just make shit up.
  12. Nobody wants to read a book that uses words people actually use. Utilize a folio of thesauralogical usages. #50tips
  13. Everything! Can be! An EXCLAMATION!!!! You can never have enough exclaiming. #50tips
  14. #50tips When in doubt, repeat after me: "Holy crap!" Repeat that again. Again. One more time. Good.
  15. #50tips Overcook some pasta. Good job! That's your heroine.
  16. @SmartBitches #50tips Remember, if you use someone else's ideas, it's fair play. If someone else uses your ideas, sue the shit out of them.
  17. #50tips Don't forget - EVERYONE must be attracted to your heroine. EVERYONE.
  18. @SmartBitches #50tips Give your heroine an 'adorable' habit like biting her lip, then reference on every page. (No point in overdoing it.)
  19. #50tips Frequently remind your readers that one of your characters is Latino by having him repeatedly say "Dios mio!" Casual racism works!
