Arrest at Loyalist College

A 24 year-old area man carrying a knife and showing it off to students does not attend Loyalist College, president Maureen Piercy said in email to the college Tuesday night.

  1. Shane Patrick Sabourin of Carleton Place,Ontario was charged with one count each of possessing dangerous weapons, assaulting police, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance. He will appear in court on October 8.
  2. Police said the individual was in possession of a knife but did not brandish it or utter threats to anyone. He became confrontational and resisted arrest. Police used pepper spray to subdue him.
  3. Eyewitness Mo Cranker, a second year journalism student, “ I saw six or seven police officers pulling him to the car. The guy was yelling at police and started bashing his head against the window as the car was driving away.”
  4. Loyalist College president Maureen Piercy sent an email to staff and students acknowledging that an incident took place.
  5. "As you may be aware, an incident has taken place in the Kente Building at our main campus, involving an individual who has been taken into custody. Belleville Police Service were here within minutes and are investigating," she said.

    "Please be assured that Loyalist has taken every precaution to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff. "
