Demonstration in Madrid ends in widespread police brutality
Wednesday's march in support of the Asturian miners in Madrid led to confrontations with the police. The most serious ones were this morning, as protesters attempted to break into the Ministry of Industry. After a relatively peaceful march that ended in Sol police evicted the crowd violently.
- At around 11 PM isolated fires began around the center of Madrid, as well as reports stating that a group of radical protesters tried to break into Congress. Media estimates 76 people were wounded (including an 11 year old girl) and 9 were arrested. The information below is in chronological order. How do police in a democracy handle protest -- even obnoxious behavior? My book struggles with these and other issues. Experiences I have gained from 30+ years in policing. For help, take a look at my new book and then answer the question, is this excessive force or not? “Arrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off About Protest, Racism, Corruption and the Seven Steps Necessary to Improve Our Nation’s Police.” My blog is at http://improvingpolice.wordpress.com/ where I discuss these and other current police improvement issues. Good luck and may we all experience great policing in both of our countries!more2012-07-15T22:02:13.498Z
