Preservation Fundraising and Funding

Highlights of the December 2012 #builtheritage Twitter chat.

  1. Q1: What fundraising techniques have worked best for your projects?

  2. A1. We've tried to be a little more creative on our event side. Starting doing pub crawls bringing new people and income. #builtheritage
  3. A1. People still love house tours. Also a great way to get volunteers involved and directly contact historic homeowners. #builtheritage
  4. A1: Have found over past yr finding a balance - event $, direct ask, silent auction, etc. Don't put all eggs in 1 basket. #builtheritage
  5. A1. Fund v Friend-raiser save $ on friends, frequent sm events. Big old donor galas. Real Q is who is your market? #builtheritage
  6. Q2:  How to do you collect donations? Events, crowd-funded sites, online systems?

  7. A2 Have to look at your funders. At @blackiowa our member and donors are middle-aged, so we use some paper, some on-line. #builtheritage
  8. A2. Online like @PayPal & @Eventbrite, plus @Square credit card reader for smartphones makes you a mobile bank. #builtheritage
  9. A2 In Canada canadahelps.org is fabulous, non-profit that makes it easy to take donations. #builtheritage
  10. Q3: Where are you finding funding outside of membership/events? Foundations? Grants?

  11. A3: I think the most innovate thing I've seen is community bonds from @csiTO - used to raise funds for their new bldg #builtheritage
  12. A3 Benjamin Moore paints also has a fund to provide paint and I think some $ for restoratin owork #builtheritage
  13. A3 Grants @NEAarts + @NatlParkService focused directly on bldg conservation & public events, less strings than corporate $ #builtheritage
  14. Q4: Have you noticed any changes in the amount of funding available in your city/state/province?

  15. A4 Lots of funding on hold in Florida. You can still apply, but nothing coming out at the moment. #builtheritage
  16. A4: I think areas affected by Sandy will see an influx o/money but how that filters down to heritage orgs is yet to be seen #builtheritage
  17. @PresNationLive A4: In Ontario, some sources of project funding have been cut, other types of funding are stable or growing. #builtheritage
  18. A4 Money will flow from #Sandy donors for awhile but will slow down for on-going, critical recovery work. #historictrend #builtheritage
  19. And now, the usual reminder for next month's chat:
