ASP2012

So I tweeted a lot from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific meeting in Tucson this week. I'm saving them partly to share and partly for my own note taking purposes!

  1. Day 1
  2. Confronting Misconceptions with Mary Dussault, Ed Prather, and Page Keeley. Modeling one type assessment w/ Q index cards #asp2012
  3. Not about "fixing" misconceptions. "Mention and move on" doesn't work. Help learners resolve them and rediscover. #asp2012
  4. Put "Understanding Misconceptions in Astronomy" on my wish list! #asp2012
  5. Some misconceptions are fully formed and thought about. Many are not, stem from how brain works. These are primitives. #asp2012
  6. Example of primitive: closer means more. Keeps us from burning up and dying, but possible source of season misconception. #asp2012
  7. Keely: Students need to experience cognitive dissonance. You can't fix the misconceptions for them. #asp2012
  8. Have students explicitly explain Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER). Hey, that's a helpful tool for skeptics in edu, too! #asp2012
  9. My own thoughts: lots of misconceptions about radio astronomy. Would love to tackle. Begin with collendar over cell phone? #asp2012
  10. Issues of "tone" in teaching beyond misconceptions. Change the culture of the classroom towards respect, not just right answer. #asp2012
  11. .@boraz gets a shoutout during the science journalism talk by Petit at #asp2012 :-)
  12. Is science journalism benefiting from the "leaky pipeline" of women in science? 2/3rd new writers are women. Investing hypothesis #asp2012
  13. Petit encourages #asp2012 to check out the "tribe" of bloggers involved with Science Online. :-D
  14. Petit emphasizes simplicity in writing. I wish that was true in academic writing, too. #asp2012 #zomgthesis
  15. Large astronomy posters at outdoor concerts and music fests. Hmmm.. What about Ren Faires? #asp2012
  16. Good to note: track outcomes for your event if you want to get more funding to continue! #asp2012
  17. At "Astronomy Outreach for Large and Unique Audiences" #asp2012
  18. Ok so people setting things on fire with telescopes also scary... Basic safety good to keep in mind with EPO #asp2012
  19. Who is in charge? Who is paying? What do you want them to experience? Who is your audience? Things to ask when planning #asp2012
  20. "Doing a star party for 5th graders is like herding cats." Indeed. #asp2012 cc @DSBK_Astro
  21. Day 2
  22. At a workshop on evaluation of programs. Probably taking "real" notes rather than tweeting, but will share later via blog #asp2012
  23. One thing I've learned is that a background in research science doesn't quite prepare one for research in social sci! #evaluation #asp2012
  24. You can be a part of this satellite mission through kickstarter. This is SO cool! ow.ly/1OpgHw #asp2012
