On April 30, 2012, the Smithsonian's National Zoo live-tweeted the artificial insemination of female giant panda Mei Xiang.

  1. Ever wondered what a giant panda AI is like? Find out today! We will live-tweet Mei Xiang's AI at 4 p.m. s.si.edu/aBZ4T #pandaAI
  2. Dr. Dave Wildt here! I'm reproductive scientist at the National Zoo and head of the Center for Species Survival. #pandaAI
  3. We performed the first artificial insemination about 15 hours ago. #pandaAI
  4. The microscope is set up, the pipettes are ready and the slides are prepped. A little more to do until we'll bring in Mei Xiang. #pandaAI
  5. Mei Xiang is 13 and the mother of Tai Shan, who was born in 2005 and beloved in DC. Baby pandas= #pandamania! #pandaAI
  6. #pandaai I feel like I'm in the surgery room with Mei :D
  7. We sent Tai to his new home in China in January, 2010. #pandaAI
  8. Today I’ll use the term “AI.” “AI” stands for artificial insemination. We hope it’ll help us produce a panda cub! #pandaAI
  9. We've started the process of anesthetizing Mei Xiang #pandaAI
  10. If you have questions during this procedure, tweet @NationalZoo with #pandaAI. We’ll do our best to answer a few of them!
  11. There are 15-20 of the Zoo’s scientists, animal keepers and vets in the room, waiting. Lots of equipment. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/9PbIC3z5
  12. We even have two colleagues here from China, Dr. Li Desheng and Ms. Zhou. It’s an exciting day! Among my favorite times of year. #pandaAI
  13. The keepers and vets are carrying Mei on a tarp now with handles. It takes 8 people—she weighs about 230 lbs. #pandaAI
  14. Last night we couldn’t get quality sample from Tian, so we used a frozen sample from 2005, the year Tai Shan was born! #pandaAI
  15. Today we're using the same process using the "vintage" sperm. #pandaAI
  16. Mei Xiang looks surprising small on the table. I’m standing about 5 feet away. #pandaAI
  17. Mei is wearing a blue mask to get anesthesia. The vets are monitoring her heart rate and blood pressure, too. #pandaAI
  18. There are about seven or eight people around Mei—vets and scientists. Her keepers are hanging back and watching, ready to help. #pandaAI
  19. I'm learning so much about panda sperm from following the #PandaAI tag. Thanks, internet.
  20. Dr. Desheng and Dr. Comizzoli are inserting a thin tube about 12 inches into Mei filled with sperm. #pandaAI http://pic.twitter.com/kRtzob5r
