PRO-ductivity and CON

A discussion with Matt Alexander regarding his concerns with the recent resurgence of productivity sites.

  1. The post that started it all... I'm a fan of Matt's writing, but believe his contention that, "purported elements of productivity often become deep pits of wasted time and effort" contains some truth, but that it's overly pessimistic.
  2. I wrote a post about it... wanna read it? Here it goes...
  3. Matt recently expanded on his thoughts and to say that we see things different is putting it mildly...
  4. Next up, a long winded (at least my end of it was) conversation on Twitter...
  5. @mattalexand has me very excited to read and likely disagree with his post :)
  6. For those looking to disagree or agree along with me, here’s the link to this month’s Read and Trust transactions.digitaldeliveryapp.com/stores/1334/13… (affiliate)
  7. @MSchechter I guarantee you will most certainly more than disagree with me!
  8. @mattalexand Nothing wrong with that. I always enjoy your perspective, even when I disagree :)
  9. @mattalexand Had to give it a quick read, but it’s funny that we fundamentally agree at the core, we just disagree with the mechanism.
  10. @mattalexand I’m glad you’ve never experienced having perpetually crossed wires. That the things that slip through the cracks are few.
  11. @MSchechter Which is, funnily enough, something I can totally identify with.
  12. @mattalexand But I assure you, so much of what I’m doing is exactly what you’re advocating, dealing with the real problem, me.
  13. @mattalexand I have a feeling a VERY long post and/or series of posts will be coming based on this, but the more I work on this (cont).
  14. @mattalexand The less it’s about productivity for productivity’s sake and more about learning the best way each of us does our own work.
  15. @mattalexand Totally agree that that can get lost in finding cool tips, tools and toys...
  16. @mattalexand but I can also tell you that my ability manage before I found a few of them was slim.
  17. @MSchechter I don’t doubt their legitimate use for some people. It’s more that I worry some use it as a way to avoid actual work.
  18. @MSchechter Time spent in the name of work but for the achievement of little in the way of productive work.
  19. @mattalexand Optimizing is often distraction, but unless many get those key elements right, it can be impossible to produce.
  20. @MSchechter I don’t mean to sound reductive of people and their legitimate issues, I just worry that these solutions may cause more issues.
  21. @mattalexand They do, and I think sound caution is an essential thing (offered some of it myself last week: bettermess.com/technological-…)
