Association Chat: Career Development for Association Professionals

Association Chat happens on Twitter every Tuesday at 2 pm ET and is usually hosted by @kikiliatlien - but I had the lucky chance to step in for the week.

  1. [HOST] (Q1): How do you develop skills as an association professional? Where do you go for training?
  2. [A1] Obvious answer is ASAE, although that's more professional development than 'training'. #assnchat
  3. @KyleeCoffman @ThadLurie [A1] Yup, the CSAE up here in Canada. Although they are more active in Ontario than here in BC #assnchat
  4. A1. Ideally, conferences & workshops. Increasingly, going with budget-friendly options through webinars, social media. #assnchat
  5. A1 state allied societies & assns such as AMA, ASTD, SHRM etc #assnchat
  6. @KyleeCoffman A1 There are many choices for training/prof development. Obv ASAE but I'd rec looking outside the industry too! #assnchat
  7. @KyleeCoffman A1 (cont'd) Assoc. prof should also look to their job function and see what's best of breed w/in their field #assnchat
  8. @KyleeCoffman [A1] There is an informal group of Dir of Communications from assocs here in Vancouver. Informal learning. #assnchat
  9. @KyleeCoffman I'm not part of the group, just aware of it. Not sure how it got started. #assnchat
  10. @KyleeCoffman my knowledge is more on the events side of things so unfortunately I don't have a ton of recs beyond ASAE lol #assnchat
  11. @sched - any other great associations for association professionals you might recommend? #assnchat #assnchat
  12. @sched @KyleeCoffman Yes, job function matters. Staff involved in online community management could consider the Pillar Summit #assnchat
  13. @sjreeves: A1. Ideally, conferences & workshops. Increasingly, going w/ budget-friendly options via webinars, social media. [+1] #assnchat
  14. A1 (sorry I'm late) Look for assoc-related local groups, e.g. a monthly meeting of assoc fund-raising professionals. #assnchat
  15. [HOST] (Q2): Do you mentor others? Have you been mentored?
  16. @KyleeCoffman [A2] I do mentoring, but not in the assoc space (mentor Ph.D. students at UBC) #assnchat
  17. @AssociCom re: mentoring PhD's; Oh cool! Do you have a PhD? Should we be calling you Dr.? :) #assnchat
  18. @sched Yup, I have a Ph.D. in CompSci. But only because I liked school more than working :-) #assnchat
  19. A2 I do mentor others & recently found some good mentoring checklists (I love checklists!) for both mentor & mentee #assnchat
  20. A2 especially good way to mentor is at conf - help decide which sessions to attend & then discuss afterwards #assnchat
  21. [A2] I try to informally mentor staff in self advocacy and planning and executing a path - nobody is going to hand it to you. #assnchat
  22. @ThadLurie re: informal mentoring, you are telling them the truth! Hopefully it helps you do your job better too! #assnchat
  23. A2. Haven't had a chance to be a mentor, but have a number of mentors. #assnchat
