New Brunswick cross-country skiing Q&A with Brian McKeown #NBExpert

Tourism N.B. (@SeeNewBrunswick) hosted a Q&A session on cross-country skiing skiing with Brian McKeown of Fredericton's Radical Edge as part of its #NBExpert series. We've compiled some of the highlights below.

  1. Calling all cross country skiers! Ask away! RT @SeeNewBrunswick: Welcome to the start of our #NBExpert session with XC skier @BrianMcKeown.
  2. A bit about today’s #NBExpert: @BrianMcKeown has been racing, coaching, and selling nordic skis for over 25 years. ow.ly/i/1lYxe
  3. Jamie Lamb asked about the best way to hydrate while taking part in ski races.
  4. @BrianMcKeown Q: drinking in ski races is cumbersome; seems much less emphasized than in cycling. Bottle or c'bak bladder jersey? #NBxcski
  5. #NBExpert: “A bottle for shorter events. Camelback with insulated drinking tubes that won't freeze is super convenient. #NBxcski
  6. #NBExpert: “What I do is put hot water with lemon and honey in my insulated water bottle.” #NBxcski
  7. #NBxcski -I ski with a bottle, not backpack, and prefer it. Fill your bottle with luke warm or hot warmer to avoid freezing on the trail.
  8. Anna MacFarlane of the Nackawic Bend Ski Club had a few questions about skiathalons.
  9. @SeeNewBrunswick Do you have any experience with the Skiathlon type races? Classic/Transition/Skating!! #NBxcski
  10. #NBExpert: “In the olympics you have classic and skate, and both are incredibly difficult, just different.” #NBXCski
  11. #NBExpert: “Skate skiing is trending the most right now. It's infectious, fun, and fast.“ #NBXCski
  12. Brownwyn Pavey of the Chignecto Ski Club in Fundy National Park wanted to know about waxing.
  13. @SeeNewBrunswick How does air temperature compare to snow temperature, when it comes to waxing? Do I need a snow thermometer? #NBxcski
  14. #NBExpert: Air temp can be warmer or colder than snow temp. Using a snow thermometer takes the guess work out. #NBxcski
  15. @SeeNewBrunswick What is the major difference in waxing for skating vs. classic?#NBxcski
  16. #NBExpert: “Skate skiing is glide wax from tip to tale. No kick wax, like in classic.” #NBXCski
  17. The Wostawea Ski Club in Fredericton wanted to know about keeping in shape during the off-season, while a few other tweeps had gear-specific questions.

  18. @SeeNewBrunswick @brianmckeown What's the best thing you can recommend to do to keep in shape during the off season?
  19. #NBExpert: @WostaweaSkiClub Be sports specific. Skate skiers should try cycling. For classic skiier, running. #1is roller skiing. #NBxcski
  20. @SeeNewBrunswick #NBxcski #NBExpert I'm a snowshoer/bushwacker but have been thinking about XC lately. Recommendations of starter gear?
  21. #NBExpert: “Sounds like you'd enjoy backcountry skiing. It has its own special gear. Just ask at your local stores.” #NBXCski
  22. @SeeNewBrunswick what's a rough rule of thumb for skate pole length for racing? Does it vary with strength/style/course? #NBxcski #NBExpert
  23. #NBExpert: “Pole length is from chin to the nose. I err on the side of the nose (most people don't buy poles wearing boots).” #NBSCski
  24. The Twitter Q&A was timely, as it coincided with the release of new research showing cross-country
skiing's incredible power to keep people fit.
