Twitter responds to Obama's gay marriage announcement

A roundup of some of the more notable tweeted reactions to the president's remarks:

  1. The president himself (or someone from his team) tweeted the news.

  5. ... and so did a few prominent Republicans.
  6. The President of the United States just put himself on the opposite side of 32 statewide electorates. I could not be happier.
  7. Hollywood, in this case Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody tweeting under her birth name, was (perhaps predictably) pleased
  8. Even Gawker writers dropped the snark for a bit ...
  9. For the first time in history, a sitting president endorses marriage equality. Sorry I'm not cynical enough to shit on that.
  10. ... FOX Nation headline writers, on the other hand, couldn't resist a potshot.

  16. And Obama's presumptive competition in the 2012 race remained mum on Twitter. He did give this quote to the media though.
  17. Romney: "My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights and the like are appropriate but that the others are not"
  18. We're not entirely sure what this tweet says, but the picture sort of sums up the sentiment across the pond.

  22. Of course, she's a left wing Yankee. Here's a different take from the heartland:
