Britain's Gay Footballers

A compilation of the best tweets from Gay Sports Blog's (@gaysportsblog) coverage of the BBC three documentary exploring attitudes to homosexuality in football.

  1. Amal Fashanu starts the show by interviewing her uncle John Fashanu, who infamously condemned his brother when he came out.
  2. First up on Britain's Gay Footballers - John Fashanu. Will be interesting to see what he has to say...
  3. Fashanu: No footballer received abuse like it. "being gay, that's a different ball game"
  4. He says football was "too macho". "More chance of the next Pope being black" than a player speaking about their sexuality.
  5. The focus then turns to homophobic chants at football games, particularly prevalant at Brighton. Here's one (of many examples) of abusive chants from away fans at the AmEx Stadium.
  6. With chants at Brighton fans, views are more mixed. Majority say such chants are homophobic.
  7. Individual players have also been targetted, such as former Tottenham defender Sol Campbell.
  8. Arsenal fan Matt Lucas gives Amal his thoughts on the abuse received by Campbell.
  9. Lucas: Sol Campbell chants "wrong" and "Kind of illegal"
  10. Lucas: out footballers would get "hell" from opposing fans, but be protected by their own supporters.
  11. Amal then interviews John McGovern - a former colleague of Justin Fashanu at Nottingham Forest.
  12. John McGovern does laugh a lot. Mainly inappropriately it must be said. Apparently that's what footballers do.
  13. According to John McGovern, you use the word "poof" in a banterous sense. This is a massive part of the problem.
  14. Max Clifford also offers his opinion
  15. Max Clifford: last 15-20 years "half a dozen" players he knows of who are gay. "No chance" of them coming out.
  16. Interesting to compare the differing attitudes in football and rugby. Amal speaks to rugby player Gareth Thomas.
  17. Gareth Thomas: coming out "a huge weight" off his shoulders. "Best, most overwhelming feeling"
  18. Homophobia in football won't be dealt with until #britainsgayfootballers come out. Managers/clubs/FA need to create climate where they can.
  19. Openly gay former NBA basketball star John Amaechi offers his insight into coming out as a sportsman.
  20. John Amaechi: "homophobia happens in boardrooms...takes me back to being 11 years old"
  21. Amal then returns to interview her father about the way he treated his brother Justin.
