CHOCOLATE AND A GOOD TALK... WHAT ELSE?

  1. Some days ago, our teacher started preparing us for something BIG. Different roles (disseminators, speakers, content curators and a moderator), an interesting topic and a date, the 7th of April, were the ingredients for our dessert: a CHOCOTALK. As good recipes, everything had to be perfectly synchronized to obtain a good taste.
  2. The disseminators play an extraordinary labour promoting our challenge, an on live talk between classmates. Tweets, posts and comments revealed a sweet date that should not be missed.
  3. Finally, the 7th of April commenced our first “Chocotalk”.
    Just on time, the speakers of each group were appearing on the screen while Laura, the moderator, explained what was this talk about and gave way to the groups introduction.

  4. With feelings on the edge and minor technical problems, the moderator introduced the first topic: the advantages and disadvantages of CLIL.
  5. All the participants agree on how appropriate this methodology is in a bilingual environment since it allows teachers to connect subjects and contents. However, Rubén, as a High School teacher, argued the difficulties which entailed the fact that in this stage each subject is carried out by different teachers. Other classmates explained that, in this specific case, the communication between teachers gained importance and, as Celia posed, the commitment of the school, since they can utilize the project-based methodology to promote interdisciplinary. Our speakers came up with another idea, the use of ICT to develop a cross-curricular methodology.

After valued positively CLILapproach, Guillermo was the first to highlight that some authors do not support this method and pose some drawbacks such as the lack of competence in their mother tongue or even the stress that some students experience as they have to speak in other language. However, the other colleagues did not agree with that statement, arguing that all depended on the teachers’ scaffolding and support.
  7. The second topic that was introduced was the motivation. After all the members of the talk agreeded that this element is essential in order to make the student feel comfortable in class, they underline that the use of ICT can promote this motivation since we are living the e-communication and technological era, so why not to use it?
    Although all agreed in its importance, at the time Patricia spoke about “emotional intelligence" theory, the debate arouse. Some of the speakers thought that, even though it is indisputable that it is essential, maybe we are leaving aside other major aspects in the class. As Álvaro said: "we must develop the emotional part of our students, no matter how old they are”.
  8. All the speakers agreed on the following topic exposed: the mother tongue is not affected by the bilingual education since the students have the opportunity to develop that language in other contexts, such as at home, with their friends, in the society…and so on.
  9. Concluding the previous comments andopinions, Laura, introduced a new and essential topic on this talk: the use of ICT’s in the classroom. The moderator invited her colleagues to give their opinion about the use of these tools for CLIL teaching.
    It was Alvaro, an expert on this area, who broke the ice by saying that, from his point of view “it is more important for students to know how to manage these resources than actually the results of their work” in other words, he highlighted that the use of ICT’s requires a understanding of how to manage the tool in order to reach their goals and to use theircreativity to take advantage of every device that instrument offers.
  10. This point was slightly mentioned by Inmaculada when speaking about motivation in a previous topic. She signified that children can be motivated through the use of new ICT’s since we are in theICT era, moreover, she thinks that the use of these resources have another advantage as it increases their readiness to learn as well as to have an active participation within the classroom.
  11. After listening to Neus, who accurately recommended some very useful tools that can be introduced in theclassroom, Celia contributed to this issue by giving us a really surprising idea: the use of videogames as an educative tool.
