Feds Announce New Digital Government Strategy

GSA and our Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies (OCSIT) are going to play a major role in the new plan announced this week - http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/egov/digital-government/digital-government-strategy.pdf

  1. “I want us to ask ourselves every day, how are we using technology to make a real difference in people’s lives.” – President Barack Obama
  2. Announcing: #DigitalGovt Strategy-Building a 21st century platform to better serve the American ppl wh.gov/digitalgov #tcdisrupt
  3. "We have the opportunity to transform government…this has the chance to catalyze that"-@StevenVDC re: oreil.ly/LoFKkq
  4. RT @digiphile: .@StevenVDC: Americans' expectations of #digitalgov are changing: they expect more, & on mobile WH.gov/digitalgov http://pic.twitter.com/eCKPAZMO
  5. #digitalGov - streamlined procurement & management of devices, apps, and data
  6. One of the hallmarks of the new strategy is a data-first plan. GSA's Data.gov site manages over 450,000 datasets from 172 agencies and more coming all the time.

  7. Government-wide open data policy will transform how citizens use govt information @stevenvdc @todd_park #digitalgov
  8. #digitalgov VanRoekel says data.gov will evolve into a developer portal with links to live data.
  9. "Open data leads to more awesomeness being built." -Park (oddly with no HT to @GovLoop) #digitalgov
  10. "For years its been 'we have ideas, build another website.' Agencies need to look harder at data & context" - Sheila Campbell on #DigitalGov
  11. One of big the deals of #DigitalGov : all content is data, incl. web pages. No more focusing on "data sets" while ignoring websites. #Gov20
  12. #digitalGov: @todd-park says Data .gov was great step forward. But we learned what's better is engaging users, innovators from beginning.
  13. .@Stevenvdc: Agencies will no longer bulk upload to data.gov-site will become dev portal to data housed at agencies #digitalgov
  14. People want to have access to the government any time, anywhere and on any device. That means mobile is going to be a high priority.

GSA's http://apps.usa.gov has dozens of government mobile apps to help you with everything from contacting Congress to tracking desert tortoises.

  15. Government apps and mobile sites offer official information and services from the palm of your hand. Learn more about apps.
  16. When it comes to the power of open data, mobile apps are just the tip of the iceberg #DigitalGov @stevenvDC @todd_park
  17. .@Todd_Park: we don't want the #digitaldivide to reinforce others. We jump to apps too fast. Tip of the iceberg for how #opendata can help.
  18. New #digitalgov strategy not just mobile apps, but people starting to talk to each other and using the data & each other #gov
  19. With new initiatives & "bring your own device" this is important: RT @marydavie: Focus on secure data - not just devices #DigitalGov
  20. This strategy is designed to be "disruptive" to the way government has traditionally worked. GSA's Gwynne Kostin will be heading up the new Digital Services Innovation Center to manage some of this.

  21. #DigitalGov calls for creation of Digital Services Innovation Center; development of APIs by agencies 1.usa.gov/digitalgovstra…
