Revaluing Ecosystems

On October 31st, The Economist Intelligence Unit, the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Resources Institute held a Twitter chat to discuss the future of revaluing ecosystems. Below are some of the ideas and questions raised during the chat.

  1. The chat began with introductions from the virtual participants.
  2. Question 1 focused on the personal stories of our followers. We asked "Have environmental damages affected you personally now or over your lifetime? How?" Many responses mentioned adverse health consequences and the impact of Superstorm Sandy. Some respondents said environmental damages hadn't affected them personally.
  3. Question 2 asked "Does your community appreciate your natural ecosystems and the services they bring? How?" The responses generally answered the question of how you should value ecosystems -- monetarily or otherwise?
  4. Question 3 shifted to community action and asked "How is your community helping protect or improve ecosystems?" Many of the responses cited grassroots efforts as particularly effective at protecting ecosystems. Others mentioned the field of biomimcry, or the imitation of nature to solve complex issues, as an alternative way of valuing the natural world.
