Early Career Publishing in run-up to REF

Earlier today after I tweeted about a Journal rejection email I received, less than 24 hrs after submission, stating that the Journal had "more submissions for our refereeing process than we can cope with". This led to the following fascinating discussion ..

  1. Wow, quickest journal rejection ever - submitted 4pm yesterday, rejected 8am today. Journal has a huge backlog apparently :/ #acwri
  2. @DrSustainable I've ever heard of a journal basically say they're too backlogged to take new papers. But, as you say, blessing in disguise?
  3. @Peter_Tennant First for me too. Rejection email reads like a generic reply with the name of my paper inserted
  4. @DrSustainable same stories here in Oz too in past fortnight, but only w/ UK based journals. Circumstantial evidence of REF flooding impact?
  5. @DrSustainable You're lucky. I submitted to one in Oct 2011. They had a backlog & finally rejected it June 2012 when the journal folded!
  6. @profcgibson @DrSustainable Measure of impact = forced shut-down of saturated journals. 4* for closure of international journal.
  7. So now strategy re: publishing - aim for lower "quality" journals? - quicker turnaround = more publications? thoughts?
  8. If we all publish in lower "impact" journals just to get work out there - will these journals then become higher "impact"?
  9. @DrSustainable Sounds an interesting question. esp when you through impact of digital in there. What was the context of the question?
  10. @robeasson I have a paper rejected from a *high* impact journal due to huge backlog to publish - others very long delay for same reason
  11. @DrSustainable Ah ok. Can you find other routes to disseminate and create your own "high impact" without said journal?
  12. @robeasson Yes and no...can create impact, but to build academic career impact is measured in *quality* of journals you publish in..
  13. @DrSustainable Sustainable should apply to publications too: well made, long lasting, worth the effort, nourish others
  14. @ProfLesleyHead @drsustainable plurality of outlets vital to counter disc. journal oligopolies. Reqs big name authors to diversify choices?
  15. @ProfLesleyHead Suspect quality of papers submitted in run up to ref not as good? desperation to get something out there before census date?
  16. Experiment - Publish in *low* quality journal, but disseminate widely through blog and social media = more views and potential citations?
  17. @DrSustainable This is a very risky strategy and a short-term one. One thing all my mentors have stressed is importance of aiming high.
  18. @cathfeely Hear that - but if you cant get published, or delay is such that work is out of date and irrelevant - no point submitting...
