Wynne chosen as premier of Ontario

Some thoughts I had following the announcement of Katheen Wynne as premier of Ontario

  1. RT @kady Wow, a handy win, even -- 57 percent to 43. We have our historic first female openly gay premier in waiting, Ontario! #OLPldr
  2. Ontario is Canada's most populous province. >1/3 of all Canadians live in Ontario. Kathleen Wynne is now the leader of government.
  3. Four of ten Canadian provinces are now led by women. Five of 12 provinces/territories. Unprecedented in our history.
  4. Canada's Supreme Court has a female Chief Justice as well. I'm a fan.
  5. RT @C_onfessor: The newly-elected Premier of Canada's largest province just thanked her spouse, Jane. U can argue all U want; same-sex marriage is a thing.
  6. @C_onfessor - I think "newly ELECTED" is probably inaccurate. She was chosen by delegates, not the people of Ontario
  7. A lot of people talking about "glass ceiling shattered". I don't think that's necessarily true, and will touch on this on Monday.
  8. Regardless, I am proud to be Canadian at this moment. For all our flaws, we are trying our best to get better.
  9. Note: all that this really means is that a) being female, and b) being gay, are not necessarily complete disqualifiers for public office
  10. It's not a rainbow/pink utopia or anything like that. Just one big step in the direction of full equality.
  11. Also should be noted that Wynne beat Sandra Pupatello for the position. Either way the final ballot went, premier would have been female
  12. The question I have is whether a gay premier has to overcompensate by not addressing gay issues. Not a remote possibility.
  13. @Crommunist it will likely be like a gay state supreme judge being told he should have recused himself on a gay marriage law.
  14. @tynk_ - possibly, possibly not. Recusal doesn't really apply to premiers, so her purview is broader than a judge's.
  15. @Crommunist the recusal was not the point. The detractors were trying to discredit his ruling by any means available.
  16. @tynk_ - I think she will likely get pushback from the conservative wing of her party. She may not care, or may think more votes on left.
  17. @tynk_ - hopefully she says "I'm not backing down from my convictions", gives homophobic Libs the two-finger salute.
