I talk with City Councilman Jumaane Williams
City Councilman Jumaane Williams, who took my civil liberties course, spoke vs my dept's co-sponsorship of a panel at Brooklyn College. He urged BC president to have my chair create "balance" or withdraw our co-sponsorship. This ensued. Featuring Katha Pollitt and NYS Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh.
- City Councilman @JumaaneWilliams took my grad class on civil liberties. Now he says he "supports views expressed (cont) tl.gd/ktctdh
- .@alexbkane @JumaaneWilliams U took my class on civil liberties; pressure from govt officials on campus speech is ok? That's what U learned?
- @CoreyRobin @alexbkane @JumaaneWilliams why the fuss over this panel? opponents can organize a panel in response. THAT's the 1st amendment.
- @KathaPollitt @alexbkane B/c it's not "balanced." Tho @JumaaneWilliams didn't worry when Dersh defended torture warrants at BC w/o rebuttal.
- @CoreyRobin @alexbkane @JumaaneWilliams Does every controversial panel have to be balanced? I doubt it.
- .@KathaPollitt @alexbkane Only those critical of Israel. @JumaaneWilliams' "fellow alumnus," whose views he shares, gets to speak alone.
- If my powers of indoctrination as a prof are so great, why is my former student @jumaanewilliams siding w/Dershowitz? capitalnewyork.com/article/politi…
- @CoreyRobin @KathaPollitt @alexbkane frankly, I explained I agreed w/him on one point. I've agreed w/Bloomberg and Kelly and points as well.
- @CoreyRobin u're quote of me oddly left out the urging was onlyif "equity" couldn't be accomplished. No worries #nypost does it all the time
- @JumaaneWilliams I left it out b/c I was doing you a favor; requiring us to invite people is even worse than asking us to not sponsor.
- @CoreyRobin also never even alluded 2 my support being contingent on my suggestions. Sooo... electeds should NEVER speak about academics?
- @JumaaneWilliams You realize this is a student event. So when you demand "balance," you as govt. official are requiring students to invite.
- @JumaaneWilliams Officials who control CUNY purse strings should not be telling faculty or students who we should and should not invite.
- @CoreyRobin "require"? I did no such thing. I suggested what I thought would be a good way to handle controversial topics.
- @JumaaneWilliams You do understand this is a student event. Why then do you ask president to tell my chair to arrange for "balance"?
- @CoreyRobin and it also makes sense to me a series on different days on this subject would be great
- @CoreyRobin I agree w/people sometimes on things even when I disagree on most things. Bloomberg/Kelly or best examples
- .@JumaaneWilliams @KathaPollitt So when @ggreenwald comes to BC next month, we have to have someone speak vs civil liberties? For balance?
- @CoreyRobin @KathaPollitt @ggreenwald I believe if a vocal group of people requested it on an academic setting. Why not?
- @JumaaneWilliams @KathaPollitt @ggreenwald But why weren't you one of those "vocal" people when Dersh defended torture at BC?
- @CoreyRobin @KathaPollitt @ggreenwald I don't even know what your talking about. I wish I did. Had I heard it then, I would've spoken out.
