Launch of the Center on Global Economic Governance

On Thursday, April 26, 2012, Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs launched its new Center on Global Economic Governance. The event featured a keynote address by Alan Krueger, Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, followed by a panel discussion:

  6. Svejnar: We envision CGEG on producing a new wave of policy recommendations on global economic issues, stressing excellence and impact.

  9. Krueger: The #UnitedStates has strengths that can help us reverse the economic downturn.
  10. Krueger: As President Obama has stressed, this is the defining issues of our time.
  11. Krueger: When President @BarackObama entered office, he faced 3 job crises. The first, was the #UnitedStates was in a deep #recession
  12. Krueger: The 2nd jobs crisis the President faced was that the #US was not creating enough jobs before the deep #jobs loss from the recession
  13. Krueger: The third #jobs #crisis was the rise in equality since the 1980s...
  14. Krueger: Because of the polarization of the wage distribution, the number of people in the middle class began to shrink.
  15. Krueger: Together, these 3 jobs crisis constitute what I call the middle class jobs deficit.
  16. Krueger: The middle class jobs deficit is both cyclical and structural.
  17. Krueger: The #American #economy became the envy of the world because if our large and inclusive middle class.
  18. Krueger: A major part of my job is to work with others in the Obama Administration reverse the middle class #jobs deficit.
  19. Krueger: Reversing the middle class #jobs deficit requires playing both good defense and good offense. Both are necessary.
  20. Krueger: Defense means that we as a nation want to hold on to and promote as many good #jobs as possible.
  21. Krueger: Offense means we want to provide opportunity for new companies and training for workers to meet the demands of the modern workforce
  22. Krueger: Over the short term, it's about reversing the #jobs loss of the #recession. (defense)
  23. Krueger: Over the longer term, #investments in research and #education promotes #economic #growth. (offense)
  24. Krueger: We as a nation need to take all responsible measures to sustain the ongoing #recovery, to solve all 3 #jobs crises.
