The Manti Te'o scandal, in 30 posts

Manti Te'o's Twitter bio reads: "Life is a storm.. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes." Well, as we all know, that storm has most definitely come. Time to man up. Let's get started, shall we?

  1. The sports world and the nation are buzzing about new reports that Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's alleged girlfriend -- a woman Te'o said died during the Fighting Irish's march toward the BCS National Championship Game -- never existed.
Many incredulous fans and media critics took to the Internet to question how someone could fool Te'o for so long. Others suggested Te'o was somehow in on the hoax, although he and the university have vehemently denied any involvement.
Here's a look at several threads surrounding all the Te'o talk.
  2. As the story first broke Wednesday and spread through social media, there was anger and disbelief.
  3. That quickly turned to a sense of betrayal. And unleashed the sarcasm of the betrayed.
  4. Manti Te'o should have made up a fake national title instead of a fake girlfriend.
  5. Please delete the second "m" in mormon when you are referring to Manti Te'o.
  6. So if you havin girl problems Manti Te'o feels bad for you son... He's got 99 problems but a girl ain't one!
  7. WHOA. I am no longer the most famous Mormon to invent an always-suspiciously-absent "girlfriend" in college. deadsp.in/fZ5POJa
  8. Am now live-tweeting a press conference about a famous player's fictitious dead girlfriend. Never saw this day coming
  9. So AJ's girlfriend is in the SI Swimsuit Issue and Te'o's is on the next edition of "Mythbusters.,"
  10. These Te'o jokes are all very funny but let's all try and remember that a person who never existed is dead.
  11. Those with experience in online dating refused to believe Te'o only communicated with the mysterious woman, Lennay Kekua, by phone and e-mail. After all, she was only in California, not Russia.
  12. I can't wait to hear what truth comes out about Te'o today at 3pm EST, but something smells really fishy. How did two early 20-something year olds, supposedly in a committed, loving relationship, not turn to Skype, Gchat, Google + hangouts or Facetime to keep in contact? Hell, even my internet-averse dad manages to use Google + hangouts.
  13. If this whole story is a guerilla ad campaign by MTV for "Catfish," I say well done MTV. Well. Freaking. Done.
  14. As the jokes escalated, players and fans began to speak out in support of Te'o.
  15. It's funny how the most opinionated people are the ones who know the least. Tighten Up, folks.
  16. Give the kid a break. What do we want? Want him to commit suicide? I have five sons, all older then him. Manti is a kid. Let's not go overboard. He didn't rape anyone, throw a game, gamble, drive drunk, or waste billions of dollars in TARP funds. He's a kid. Stop it.
  17. @ampbuckeye Good man. Did you happen to meet Manti Te'o's girlfriend on the trip?
  18. @HollaBucks Beautiful Polynesian Goddess. Her, Manti, Troy Palumalu, some 3rd string running back and I tripped on acid and played Poker
  19. But Te'o and Notre Dame already said Kekua never existed and that they had been hoodwinked, remember? Perhaps they should have tuned in to the press conference.
  20. Troy Polamalu did not meet Lennay or knew of her @ all. He's being unfairly dragged into this & has absolutely no involvement.
  21. It also didn't help that people claiming to know the girlfriend was fake several months ago had tweeted about it, including this guy.
  22. everyone needs to hit up Ronaiah Tuiasosopo and get the truth.. the truth will set you free!!
