Jack Welch Tweet: Jobs Numbers an Obama Conspiracy?

This morning, the U.S. Labor Dept. reported that the economy added 114,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate fell to 7.8%, the lowest level since 2009. Immediately following the report, a @Jack_Welch tweet unleashed a fury on Twitter.

  1. It started with this.

  3. Reaction to the former GE CEO's tweet came in from all sides on @Twitter.

  5. BLS is not manipulating data. Evidence of such would be a scandal of enormous proportions & loss of credibility.
  6. *slaps forehead*, got it! @jack_welch thinks POTUS is the CEO of the US, and can manipulate payroll numbers like he manipulated GE earnings.
  7. Think it’s time for @jack_welch, @rupertmurdoch, Alan Greenspan and Justice Scalia to retire to a nice little farm in the country.
  8. Please, no conspiracy theory on the data. Republicans, you are better than this. Don't get desperate.
  9. Jared Bernstein, just now: "Jack Welch should be ashamed of himself."
  10. And of course, plenty of sarcasm and humor to go around.
  11. Now I don't want to say these job numbers are rigged, but they arrived in an envelope bearing the wax seal of Soros...
  12. This is the Bill Clinton jobs report. Put people in a good mood, people tell surveyers they have jobs.

  14. Economic data, climate data, voter registrations, Obama birth certificate -- fake, fake, fake, fake. Everything's faked.
  15. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis addressed the conspiracy theory in a live interview on @CNBC.
  16. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to @CNBC: Notion that jobless rate was manipulated is "ludicrous."
  17. "I'm insulted" -- Labor Sec Hilda Solis, on @squawkstreet, on those who don't believe 7.8% #jobs data #NFP
  18. Defenders of the BLS data took to Twitter.
  19. I promise, when there are errors in publicly available govt data (like the BLS data), someone finds them. See: nber.org/papers/w15703
  20. I am being pilloried for saying the Labor Department data is honest. I say terrific, slag me. Call my mom!! Get me in trouble!
  21. These job numbers look good to me. Why are all my GOP friends talking down this encouraging news?
  22. I'm seeing two wingnut lines: A) This is actually a weak job report; B) The BLS is making the numbers up. So the BLS is making up weak data?
  23. Some on Twitter highlighted the fact that the @Jack_Welch conspiracy theory actually began LAST night.
  24. It turns out that @jack_welch was even doing his conspiracy-theory thing LAST NIGHT, before the number even came out! twitter.com/jack_welch/sta…
