Owls take victory over West LA Wildcats

Citrus College men's basketball team beat West LA Wildcats by 12 points

  1. The Citrus College men's basketball team beat West Los Angeles College 85-73 on Jan. 27 at Citrus.
  2. Mark Williams, guard for the Owls, scored the first point of the game and remained consistent throughout, leading Citrus with 16 points by the end of the game.
  3. The Owls set the pace of the game in the first quarter, successfully shooting multiple 3-pointers just minutes apart from guards Caleb Richey, Latrelle Franklin, Kenneth Cyprian, and Jordan McNellys.
  4. Richey followed behind Williams in points, finishing the game with 15 total points scored for the Owls.
  5. The Wildcats were never far behind the Owls however and in the 2nd quarter they continuously closed the gap.
  6. Head coach Patrick Johnson said that the team came out with a great tone and mentality the first half of the game.
  7. "At the second half we weren't always ready to go, credit to West LA, they came out and attacked us. We just have to be prepared to play hard for 40 minutes, that's the big thing," Johnson said.
  8. The Wildcats viciously kept the game close and one point were just three points away from catching the Owls.
  9. After a slow climb the Owls made it back up ahead to finish the game 85-73.
  10. West LA Wildcats assistant coach Phillip Scott said they will be focusing on their overall starter game for their upcoming games with LA Valley College on Jan. 30 after this loss, specifically their intensity level.
  11. "It was a tale of two halves for us," Scott said. "The first half we came out and we were very flat, the second half we picked up the energy a little bit and tried to make it a game. If we can do that from start to finish I think we'll be okay."
  12. The Citrus men's basketball team will be playing Bakersfield City College Rangers at Bakersfield on Jan. 30 at 5 p.m.
  13. "As long as we're playing hard and come ready to compete we'll be fine," Johnson said.
