As the world's top athletes compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, those closer to home have taken to social media to share their thoughts, reactions and favorite sports and athletes. These Olympics have been dubbed "the first social games," and local residents have embraced the spirit.

  1. Soon after the opening ceremonies on July 27, people began tweeting about how excited they were to watch the summer Olympics.
  2. Addicted to the Olympics already! My Tv is stuck on NBC!
  3. Gotta love hearing the national anthem played at the Olympics #AmericanPride #TeamUSA
  4. Throughout the first week of the Olympics, area residents have been tweeting about their favorite events, ranging from the always popular gymnastics and swimming to some lesser known sports, such as handball.
  5. There is a a 15 year old swimmer in the Olympics. I feel very unsuccessful with my life. #yougogirl
  6. Handball is my 2012 Olympic sport I care nothing about for 3 years and 50 weeks but get emotionally wrapped up in for 2 weeks.
  7. Some have tweeted about and at their favorite athletes, sending along their support and congratulations.
