ADOT Twitter account eclipses 100,000 followers

Since joining Twitter in September 2008, @ArizonaDOT has been a source of vital traffic information for the traveling public, as well as the occasional chuckle and possible eye-roll. After eclipsing 100,000 followers this week, we're taking a look back at a few memorable tweets.

  1. The tweet that started it all:
  2. Fast-forward four years to September 2012, when ADOT dedicated four public information officers to staff its Traffic Operations Center from 4 a.m. to midnight every day, including holidays and weekends. In addition to handling media inquiries on breaking traffic news, the PIOs, who work 10-hour shifts, manage ADOT's Twitter account. With four folks monitoring Twitter 20 hours a day, two major things began happening. First, much more traffic information was made available and questions from the public received almost immediate responses. Second, the transportation agency's concrete exterior was chipped away, showing its human side and that ADOT can have fun too. Seriously, what other government agency jokes about spotting Sasquatch?
  3. Below are a few of our favorite tweets. Some are funny, some have great images, some highlight the awesome work done by our co-workers, and at least one gives us all the feels.
