The Runback: Week 4

Catching you up on everything you need to know from this week in ACC football!

  1. Wolfpack Get Big Win at Florida State

  2. NC State looked like a team dead-set on exposing an opposition that hadn't played in three weeks and was putting a true-freshman under center for his first career start -- and they did just that in Tallahassee on Saturday afternoon.
  3. The Wolfpack made it difficult for the Noles to knock the rust off on both sides of the ball. Ryan Finley was poised and polished once again at quarterback, completing 22-32 passes for 230 yards and pair of touchdowns.
  4. On defense, the vaunted NC State D-line wreaked havoc on the Florida State offensive protection -- consistently putting heavy pressure on true freshman quarterback James Blackman in his first career start. Star defensive end Bradley Chubb set the tone for the Pack with seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in the redzone. His huge game earned him ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.

  6. It sounds a bit foolish just one game into the conference schedule, but the road win firmly puts NC State in the Atlantic Division title race. They're already a game up on FSU and Louisville, and will get both Louisville (Oct. 5) and Clemson (Nov. 4) at home later this season. They're experienced, balanced and as confident as ever -- a recipe for the Pack to be the surprise team playing in Charlotte come December.

  7. Duke Keeps Victory Bell with 27-17 Win Over UNC

  8. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels went back-and-forth in Chapel Hill on Saturday, but Duke stepped up in the fourth quarter to earn the right to ring the Victory Bell for the second year in a row.
  9. The play of the game came late in the fourth quarter as the Tar Heels were driving into Duke territory trailing 20-17. With just over four minutes to play, UNC quarterback Chazz Surratt was hit while throwing and subsequently picked off by Duke standout corner Bryon Fields Jr. for a pick-six that sealed the win for the Blue Devils.
  10. Fields Jr. earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors, and Duke is 4-0 to start the season for the second year in a row. The win also marked Duke's 500th win and David Cutcliffe's 100th win as the Blue Devils' head coach.

  12. Fourth Quarter Scoring Lifts Clemson Over Boston College

  13. The Boston College defense held strong for more than three quarters in Death Valley, but the Clemson offense proved to be too much as the Tigers picked up a 34-7 win on Saturday.
  14. The score was tied 7-7 heading in to the fourth quarter before Clemson scored four times in the final 12 minutes to pull away and cement the win. Freshman Travis Etienne continues to look like the next great Clemson running back, rushing for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. His career game earned him ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

  16. Georgia Tech's Run Game Too Much for Pitt

  17. Georgia Tech did what Georgia Tech does best and ran past Pitt in both teams' ACC opener in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets ran for a jaw-dropping 436 yards, led by KirVonte Benson's career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns.
  18. TaQuan Marshall continued to look like the next headache-inducing Tech QB, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. It'll be interesting to see how Marshall's passing game progresses, as he's yet to throw more than nine passes in a game this season.
